Organic Swiss Chard - Red, Green, or Rainbow


Chard is a wonderful but underrated green. Rainbow Chard makes a colourful addition to any sautée, stir fry, soup, or casserole.

Swiss Chard, unless the leaves are from a young plant, should have the stalk cut away separately and cooked a little longer than the leaves. Blanched, the leaves can be used to make vegetable wraps or used to wrap fish fillets for further baking. Swiss chard is also delicious tossed with your favourite salad dressing (i.e. honey mustard dressing) then dehydrated in the oven at a low temperature until crisp. These crisp chips are delicious for snacking or crumbled on rice as a seasoning. Blanched, swiss chard can be added to salads or grain dishes.

Try vibrant red chard in soups or sautés...its stalks have a mild beet-like flavor.

Handling & Storage:

  • Look for fresh, moist and crisp leaves with no trace of yellowing. Avoid leaves with small holes, which could indicate insect damage. Stalks should be undamaged, stiff and firm, not flabby or soft.
  • Store your chard, unwashed, in a perforated plastic bag in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Chard has a short shelf life and will keep 3 to 4 days at most, so enjoy it as soon as you can.
